06 Chapter 5
Kyuhyun and I settled on one of the beds in Hankyung’s room. Zhoumi and Henry sat together on the other bed, looking quite out of place. Ryeowook sat on the floor between the beds. Standing by the TV were Hankyung and Siwon.
“Guess what we have!” Siwon exclaimed excitedly.
“Gonorrhea!” Kyuhyun answered with mock excitement, arousing laughter from Ryeowook. Horrified, I nudged him with my elbow. “What?” he whispered. “Have you heard them at night?”
Meanwhile, Hankyung was explaining about how we could get a day off to walk around China. “I’ve arranged for us to go to a local shopping district, and then we’ll get a little tour of the city.”
“That sounds like fun,” I said, eliciting agreement and enthusiasm from the others.
Five days later I found myself pushing through a crowd and in desperate need of fresh air.
“Excuse me. Pardon me. Sorry ma’am. I didn’t mean to step on your foot.”
Groaning inwardly, I let myself get pushed along by the people. I couldn’t see any of the members. I was definitely lost. Hankyung said it was a shopping district, not an overcrowded open-air market.
I continued walking until I felt someone tugging on my right arm. I turned around to find myself looking up at Zhoumi. “This way,” he said as he led me out of the crowd and into a pet shop.
“Thanks,” I said as I wiped the sweat off my face.
It was a pretty small store. In the front were the furry animals; in the middle were the reptiles and birds; in the back were the fish and sea creatures, which was where I found Kyuhyun.
“Hey,” I greeted as I joined him in looking at the variety of fish.
“You know, I always wanted a pet fish,” he explained as he squinted his eyes at an un-puffed puffer fish.
“Yeah? What kind?”
Giving me a blank look, he deadpanned, “The kind that swims.”
I laughed appreciatively as he left to go ask Hankyung for permission to get a fish. Left by myself, I wandered around a bit and overheard our leader saying something about responsibility.
When he came back to me, he looked a bit downcast. “We’re leaving now,” he informed me.
Back on the road, I found myself being pushed and shoved and stepped on. Why was this place so populated? After a couple of steps, I noticed a toy store. Excited, I made a beeline to the colorful store, careful not to lose sight of the others, who were in an electronics store.
I quickly found the stuffed animals section, paid for a blue-striped fish with a white underside, and left with it tucked under my left arm. Moving through the mob, I spotted a dazed-looking Kyuhyun in a video store.
“Kyuhyun,” I greeted breathlessly once I stood next to him. “What are you doing here?” I looked around and practically felt my eyes jump out of their sockets. “In an adult video store!”
He muttered dazedly, “I was pushed and got caught in a pornado.”
Afraid that someone would recognize us, I pulled him out of the store. Once we were a safe distance away, I burst out, “Jesus Christ!”
“Yeah,” he echoed hollowly. Upon seeing the toy under my arm, his tone suddenly changed. “What’s with the toy?”
“Oh!” I exclaimed happily. I had forgotten about it in the midst of our porn-related emergency. “This is for you.”
His face lit up as he took the plushy into his hands. “Thank you. You didn’t have to buy it for me.”
I shrugged sheepishly. “I wanted to.”
“I’m going to name him Ariel,” he declared.
“Are you sure it’s a him?” I joked as I checked the toy’s underside.
“Yeah,” Kyuhyun smiled brightly. I returned it in kind.
I didn’t know I could make him look at me like that. After that, the people and the air didn’t bother me so much.
Later that night as I was lying on my bed and counting the dark spots on the ceiling and Kyuhyun was humming a Chinese tune to Ariel, I thought it was time I learned a bit more about him.
“Kyuhyun?”
“Yeah,” he answered.
“Can I ask a favor of you?” I inquired nervously.
“Sure.”
I stared at the ceiling, unable to look at him. “You play a lot of jokes on Siwon, and I think it’s getting to him. I don’t need to know why you do it. That’s your business. Anyways, I want you to stop.” I paused for a second. “I mean, if you want to.”
He walked over and lay with me on my bed, still holding Ariel to his chest. “Okay,” he assented.
“Really?” I asked, absolutely shocked and doubtful. I didn’t expect him to agree so quickly. “Why?”
“Because you asked me to,” he answered with a grin. “You’re so nice.” He turned over so that he was on his stomach and then placed the plushy on my chest. “You’re like a white light, so pure and unpolluted,” stated Kyuhyun with absolute conviction.
I knitted my eyebrows and gave him a doubtful look. “If I’m white light, what are you?”
“Shadow,” he replied as he left my side and returned to his bed. He turned to give me a small smile. “We can’t exist without each other.”
“Sure,” I mumbled thoughtfully. Sitting up, I turned to look at him. He laid on top of the covers with eyes closed and hands folded on his stomach. It was now or never. “Kyuhyun, I have a confession to make.”
He opened his eyes and gave me a side-long look. “I’m no priest,” he mumbled.
Not discouraged, I began, “I lied to you.” When he didn’t say anything, I inhaled deeply for strength. “On the day that someone threw a rock at Henry, you asked me about my dream and I told you that I dreamt about puppies or whatever.” I wrangled my hands in my oversized white shirt. “I’m sorry that I lied.”
“What’s the truth?” he inquired without irritation in his voice.
I felt a blush creeping up to my face. “I dreamt about you.” He turned to look at me fully with an unreadable expression. “It was a good dream. You sang to me.”
“I’m glad that I can make you happy,” he said breathily. “Even if it is in a dream.”
