Chapter 6

Kyuhyun and I were closer now than we have ever been. Sometimes, we would talk for hours about anything and everything. When one topic faded away into the walls of our room and a comfortable silence ensued, one of us would start another conversation, easily breaking the quietness without much disruption. We have confided in each other, stripping ourselves of most of our secrets.

A day after I asked him not to bother Siwon anymore, he told me that Siwon’s Don’t Don Relay Talk made him angry. I didn’t ask him to elaborate nor did I search up our Relay Talk. I was just grateful.

We confided in each other. However, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the things that mattered the most. They were saved for another day.

Today was another round of interviews, and I was exhausted. We finished late today, and it was nearly midnight by the time I finished showering.

Sitting up on my bed, I yawned as I listened to the sound of water from Kyuhyun’s shower fall down the drain. As I laid my head down on my pillow, I heard his voice permeate our room. He was singing.

Oh, Mandy

I never heard him sing this song before.

’Cause you came and you gave without taking.

His deep voice was mournful and slowly penetrated me, saturating itself in every fiber of my being.

But I sent you away, oh Mandy.

I now understood what Ryeowook when he said that there was a difference in Kyuhyun’s singing.

Will you kiss me to stop me from shaking?

There was so much feeling in his voice that if he were ever to sing like this every time, he would be completely drained of his emotions.

And I need you today, oh Mandy.

He was done. Brought back to my senses, I hurriedly left our room and headed for Ryeowook’s.
When I reached Ryeowook’s room, I rapped the door three times and waited impatiently.

“Hi!” I greeted once he opened the door to let me in. Stepping into his room, I finally told him. “I heard Kyuhyun singing tonight!”

“Yeah? It’s quite something, isn’t it?” he asked rhetorically as he drank some water.

I paced the length of his room, too excited to remember that it was nearly midnight. “I think I will confess to him,” I decided.

Leaning against the door, Ryeowook grumbled, “Can you do me one thing?” Noticing his dark expression, I nodded my consent. “When you guys become a couple, I still get two presents.”

“Huh?” I asked, taken off guard by the absurdity of the request.

His tone lightened as he approached me. “My birthday’s coming. And just because Donghae and Kyuhyun becomes DonghaeandKyuhyun doesn’t mean that I only get one present. That goes for all other holidays too. I didn’t sacrifice two presents…”

Sacrifice. Sacrifice. My mind reeled as the word jogged my memory. The chess game. Kyuhyun never had to lose his queen. It was purposeful; he wanted me to take it.

“…big, expensive presents….”

I mentally slapped myself for not recognizing it earlier. Dreams. Chess. Ariel.

“I have to talk to Kyuhyun,” I interrupted, making a mad dash for the door.

I checked our room first. He wasn’t there. And he wasn’t in any of the other rooms either. That left the roof.

Running quickly, I spiraled my way to the roof, ignoring the cry of pain from my legs.

“Kyuhyun!” I called out breathily once I was at the rusted metal door.

------------
