As soon as I saw John Glover in the cast listing for last night's "Brothers & Sisters" episode, I was like, "OMG I bet he's playing Saul's boyfriend!!!!!" And he was! Yay for John Glover on a show I actually watch (apparently he's due to be on "Heroes" sometime soon, which I also don't watch) and yay for him getting to play a non-villain somewhere other than Bway for once. He didn't have much to do this ep, but presumably they wouldn't hire someone like him if they didn't have plans for the future.
Though, on that note, this means that Arvin Sloane and Lionel Luthor are now dating. I think that trumps the
Lucius Malfoy/Lex Luthor thing, though the fact that Isaacs and Rosenbaum are in drag may balance it out.
I actually was reasonably sure that Rifkin and Glover had acted together on stage before, and in Googling around to figure out what it was, found out something else very cute. The play they were in was "The Paris Letter" by Robbie Baitz (who also created Brothers & Sisters). Apparently they recorded it in L.A. not long ago, along with Patricia Wettig (also in B&S), and with Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Radnor playing the younger version of the Rifkin and Glover characters. It's slightly more complicated than that, plot-wise, but the key thing is that there's a scene where Harris (ie Barney from HIMYM) seduces Radnor (Ted from HIMYM).
Anyway, I was like, "holy crap, was someone watching HIMYM and thinking 'wow, there's some homoerotic bromance we can transfer on stage?" But it turns out it's better than that -- the two were in the original Los Angeles production of the show several years ago -- BEFORE "How I Met Your Mother."
Which means the canonical bromance chemistry on HIMYM has its roots in those same two actors playing lovers just a few months beforehand. Heeeeeeee.
It also means that I have to give Josh Radnor a lot more credit -- apparently he has real theater chops, so it's not his fault that I can't stand Ted.
