Yes, this. I kind of went off fan auctions for a while because I won something that never materialized and the person ignored all my nudges. And I happen to know that they're still active in fandom. I think if I'd gone in knowing that, it wouldn't have put such a bad taste in my mouth. (that said, I did get the other two things I bid on in that same auction, so I suppose your luck's worse than mine)

But you're so right - just because we all have good intentions, doesn't mean everyone will follow through. I wonder if the fairly short delivery deadline for this auction will reduce the frequency of people just 'forgetting' about their items.

OTOH, I've never been defaulted on for Yuletide, though, so maybe my fannish karma balances out. (I really wanted that dalek, though. sniff.)

maybe skip the auction and just send a check.

Or text! In the US and Canada, you can text! WaPo has a rundown of other charities, including texting instructions for Canadians who'd like to give to the Salvation Army here.

Thanks for saying this. Considering the Yuletide default rate, and my personal experience with people just not being able to come across on various fic "commitments."

It's still all worthwhile to get the money where it needs to go, but managing expectations is a good thing.
