When we were getting the gerbil pair for Rowan I saw two pretty bearded dragons in the shop. Oscar was very interested in them but we decided that one new pet (pair) was enough for the moment.
They make good pets, even for young people, though you can't exactly play with them as you can with rats or cats or such. They're much lower-maintenance than a cat or a dog.
Keeping them is pretty cheap, too, considering that you can share a lot of their food :) But the initial investment is high. I spent about $300 getting Horus, even at expo discount prices, and he himself was one of the cheaper things at $50.
