The Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway tolls are broken

The Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway recently revamped their toll system. If you have an electronic toll transponder, the rates range from ¥500 to ¥900 to take the expressway. But if you pay in cash, then you’re charged the maximum ¥900 toll.

The Toie subway system is similar. $WIFE, who has a greater tolerance than I do for spending time to save small amounts of money, and who also has a regular commute on the Toei line, buys ten tickets at a time for her regular commute. The tickets come at a something like 5% discount and the Suica/Pasmo system just charges the fare. Toei also have a one day pass which does not work as a maximum for one day usage of the Toei system (unlike the Oyster card in London). OK, London is easier since it's a single system, but even so. I'm sure the Suica system saves them money over printing tickets.
