I have found a new hobby: Amber polishing.
Luckily for my purse, I won't be able to pursue it here, but while in St Peter Ording, I indulged myself and bought some unpolished lumps of amber. A lot of amber can be found there, but only in winter from November to February. They have a amber museum there, and various shops that sell amber made into jewelry. And you can buy raw amber relatively cheap and polish them yopurself, using various kinds of sandpaper until you give the last finishing touch with tooth paste and toothbrush.
I found that I love amber. The soft honey tones, the smell of resin that makes me think of old forests, and the slow discovery of what lies beyond the rough and dull surface.
I polished a bigger one as a gift for my mother, and there were two little prehistoric flies inside! Double luck, the other one destined to be a gift for my father has also flies! I still have the latter one and will scan it once it is polished.
