Since Oct.23, I'm officially aunt. My brother and his dear lady have a little baby son. Needless to say, there is great exitement and joy in my whole family right now

A hormonal thing, indeed. Know what? Some day you'll think of buying your nephew a guitar, or even worse... a drum kit. :-D At least I hope so. My little nieces have already shown quite some interest in my bass guitar, heheh.
That's one of the very nice things about being an auntie. You can be this BAD person who doesn't fall into the 'pastel braindamage'-thing... :-D
Seing that my brother is the Rock musician in our family, I'm sure he will beat me to it and little Dennis will have a guitar and drum kit before he can even walk.
As for the colour scheme and the cute animals... I suspect as these are often used in things for babies, they are instantly recognizable as "baby-related", so that the publishing houses hope that using the same colours and decorations in things about babies will let everyone spot the "right" books halfway across the bookshop and draw attention?
Oh, it's a great news! Congratulations on becoming an aunt! It's amazing how many changes a newborn brings along into this world: new parents are also being born, as well as new aunties... :) I wish the all best to you and your family!
As for pastel colors and cute little animals for all the baby-related stuff... Well, it's a bit silly, but actually I don't have much of the problems with it. However, five years ago I had a colors-for-babies-related problem: it seems like the most beloved theory back then was, that the babies react on the bright contrasts and patterns (black-red-white stripes and dots, for example) much better, than on the classical pastel-colored teddy bears. Well, I don't know about babies, but even such a bright colors loving person as I am, was getting dizzy in about of two minutes of looking at those toys and accessories.

Probably more freaked out and sleep deprived than dumb. But I do see your point.
And yes, it's funny about the pastels, since babies' brains supposedly respond best to stark black and white.
Congratulations!
