Oh, ew.

Ben is now 7 years old. Time flies and all that. In my head he's still 5- that seemed like the perfect Ben age to me. But no, aging and all ( Read more... )

So, what made you choose Arizona if you don't have plans for what to do yet? Some deranged love of warmth, you sicko? ;)

I feel ya on this one. Danny's 10 now and we're still no closer to a solution on the bowel thing. I'm just about ready to try voodoo, frankly!

I had no idea you guys were dealing with this sort of thing, too. What's Danny's issue?

I only wish I knew. It seems multi-faceted somehow. We know that he's lactose-intolerant, which I think may have kick-started some of the problems, and we know that he's prone to constipation. But somehow these things spiralled into a horrible cycle of encopresis that we have not been able to struggle our way out of yet. He doesn't seem to be able to feel it when he needs to go, so he gets backed up without realizing it, and when he gets backed up, he starts leaking around the blockage. And constipation is a vicious cycle, because it dulls sensations and weakens sphincter muscles. But the frustrating thing is that we've been working on this for YEARS, and he hasn't gone without pooping for more than 24 hours in at least a year, and he's still having the same problem. Has he permanantly damaged his plumbing? Does he just lack adequate sensors down there? Is there some serious underlying problem? No one seems to have an answer.

Whoa. Add to it daily stomach pains and subtract the lactose intolerance and you almost exactly have Benjamin. Ben's been on Miralax for the last 5 years and even then, he gets backed up. It's awful, awful, awful. We have to tell him to go because he either can't feel it or just doesn't. But at night everything relaxes and, well, I'm grateful for Goodnites large size diapers ( ... )

Arizona sounds so fun! I think you know I've been considering doing a trip like that for a while, but I am going to wait now until Isabella is a bit older. (Now I'm thinking hmmm, if I wait until Jamie is 16-17, he can help drive!)

I know this probably sounds crazy, but I wonder if in addition to gluten you might think about cutting out dairy for him for a while and seeing if that helps? I have been on a semi-vegan kick lately and have been reading SO MUCH about how dairy can cause all these stomach related issues. Might be worth a try, and if anything helps it would be good, right?
