5 books that will always stick with you

Tina posted about this and I thought I would do one of my own. She did 15, but I was writing for about an hour and only got 5. I'm a voracious reader, but I have to admit that a lot of what I read is popcorn, and I actually dislike a lot of the great works (Hemingway and Steinbeck in particular make me want to claw my eyes out).
Anyway...

God, I love Deerskin. McKinley is such a GENIUS, gah. And I hate Hemingway and Steinbeck more than I can ever put into words, as well. The Silmarillion is so fabulous. And my coworkers seem to be reading the George R.R. Martin series en masse and I'm starting to wonder if I should hop on the bandwagon.

You should! It's really amazingly written, dark, tragic, gritty, but really beautiful at times too. If I could only read a few books for the rest of my life, that series would make the cut.

I would say give it a try. If you don't want to do Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead, you could try We the Living. It's set in Russia during the Communist Revolution, and it's much more down to earth and realistic than her other works, and it is a little better written, in my opinion. I wouldn't discount it just because of the ideas - you might find that they actually make a lot of sense.
