So, yesterday morning, at 3:30 Central time, I drove with my dad to the airport, so he could leave on his annual golfing trip with his buddies. While we drove there, he told me about all the things that make Walmart a good and responsible company. Like, every store has to give $36,000 a year to local charities, and how, when a new store is built, ( Read more... )

I'd have to say that your original ideas of what to expect of a corporation are correct. American corporations are formed with the sole purpose of making the largest amount of profit per quarter, with little to no care for the stakeholders. The $36,000 given to a "local charity" may seem like a decent contribution, but when compared to the vast amounts of monies Walmart pulls out of a local community with its presences it's nothing but a drop in the bucket. It's hard to find honest intent in minimal charity donations, and it only looks to many like a cheap attempt at bribery. The money given to charities also doesn't outweigh the fact that the vast majority of walmart products are manufactured in sweatshops. This fact alone should show their true corporate colors, but they have also been known to refuse payment of overtime to it's employees ( ... )

I've had to park overnight in Walmart parking lots a couple of times before, and they always have had security guards at the ones I've visited. Maybe they changed their minds? My dad did say that a lot of the positive things they do now have been changes made in the last five or ten years.

Some of the Walmarts were forced to add security guards due to lawsuits and public outcry when this data became publicly available. As for the health care, yes it MAY be provided, but less than one 1/2 of the employees are eligible for the insurance and even then it's about as high quality as medical. Seriously, you were right with your idea the first time. I have to ask, is your father working for the company, or was this a casual passing of information? In all honesty, I cannot find one single irrefutable "good" or "kind" or truly "charitable" action that Walmart has taken in any area of these United States. If you can find some documented wonderful deeds I would be greatly interested in seeing them, but I wont hold my breath. I apologize if I seem a bit on the offensive when it comes to corporations in this country. Nothing I write here is meant in any way as an attack on you or your family, I just can't help but shout when people begin to say corporations in general, and Walmart specifically are positive institutions I have ( ... )
