so by now we all know that Gov. Palin made rape victims pay for their own "rape kit" right... but do you know why? Apparently she has no issue with the state covering "evidence gathering" - she's said so time and again. What is it exactly she has a problem with then ( Read more... )

from the article that you cite: "the Wasilla police chief, Charlie Fannon, is on record as having tried to bill victims' insurance companies, not the victims themselves, for the rape kits."

Now he didn't send the bills, the hospital sent out the actual bills. Previously they went to the police department, but under pressure from Fannon, they were being sent to the victim's insurance company instead, who then passed part of the bill onto the victim. Previously there had a line item in the city budget to handle this expense. It is Palin who cut this line item.

So, I guess "made victims pay" should read "compelled her subordinates to bill agents of victims for" - but it lacks the same pop. The bar the author of the piece you point to is trying to clear is "she's not personally sending bills for $1,200 to traumatized rape victims" - that's a pretty fucking low bar.

OH MY GOD I HATE THIS WOMAN SO MUCH.
seriously? seriously???? this is the kind of shit that alternately makes me want to crawl in a hole and hide then get out and scream this from the rooftops. this woman would be the END OF SOCIETY if she had any more power than she does now. seriously frightening stuff.
