put in the XP CD, run the recovery console, and type fixmbr.

Can't make any guarantees... but that should fix it up.

unforuntately, it didn't work. my brother is saying he had the same problem a while ago, and he had to take it in to get fixed because a part was fried from the power outage *gets heavy artillery ready* but definitely thanks for the suggestion!

yeah, that's also quite possible. Especially with cheaper power supplies.
