[ Canon Point ] : Right after he brings Rin back to life. (Manga: Volume 14, I think.)
[ History ] :
Sesshomaru is one of two sons of the Great Dog Demon. Because he is the son of two pure demons, he considers himself better than his brother, Inuyasha (who is the son of the Great Dog Demon and a human). And, to make the relationship between the two brothers even more complicated, Sesshomaru blames Inuyasha for the death of their father. But not for the reason that would seem the most logical. Sesshomaru did not care for his father in the slightest. Rather, he wanted to conquer his father in order to take his place as the Great Dog Demon. Therefore he blames Inuyasha for taking that opportunity away from him (and thus he has decided to kill him).
At the beginning of the Inuyasha series, Sesshomaru is first seen following a riddle: "Seen but never seen, protected but never known to its protector". The riddle, of course, refers to his father's tomb. Inside of his father's tomb lay the sword that Sesshomaru had coveted since the Great Dog Demon was alive. Unfortunately, once he found the answer to the riddle, he realized that he would have to bait Inuyasha into helping him unwillingly.
As it turned out, the Great Dog Demon had placed his tomb in a black pearl which was embedded in Inuyasha's eye. Sesshomaru removed it after pulling a harsh stunt on his brother. He then opened the tomb with the help of his servant, Jaken. Once inside of the tomb, he discovered that he could not pick up the sword. Their impressive father had put a barrier around it. However, said barrier did not work on Inuyasha (yet he was still unable to remove it). In an odd twist, it was Inuyasha's human companion, Kagome, that was able to remove the sword from its resting place. (Later, it was discovered that she was able to do so because she was human. The Great Dog Demon had crafted the sword in order to protect Inuyasha's mortal mother. Therefore it made sense that it would react positively to another mortal touching it.)
However, Sesshomaru couldn't take that insult sitting down. Using his poisoned claws, he tried to dissolve her. Once again, the sword protected Kagome. Given that outcome, Sesshomaru decided to reveal his true form. Facing his "foes" - or, rather, those who stood between him and Tetsaiga - as a giant, poisonous drooling dog, he played with Inuyasha, steeping his brother in his noxious fumes. At the end of the battle, however, once Inuyasha said that he would use the sword to protect Kagome, the Halfbreed was able to cut off one of Sesshomaru's front legs.
He had no choice but to retreat and lick his wounds. He didn't take too long to recover, however. Using a human arm to replace the arm he lost, he approached Inuyasha and fought him again. This time, Inuyasha was able to nearly able to kill his brother. In the last moments, Tenseiga saved Sesshomaru's life and transported him away from the battle grounds.
Whilst he was healing, a little human girl named Rin approached him. She did her best to nurse him back to health, but Sesshomaru denied her care again and again. Yet he couldn't help but feel curious about her. After several visitations, he asked her about the bruises on her face. But, because Rin was mute, all she could do was smile at him.
That smile, oddly enough, haunted the demon lord. When he was finally able to move, Sesshomaru was prepared to leave the outskirts of the village in which Rin lived. However, as soon as he took his first steps, he smelled her blood on the air. Returning to the outskirts of the village, he found her, dead, in the middle of the road. Glaring at the wolves that had killed her, he sent them running off in fear. Then, after examining her body, Sesshomaru realized that he could save her with Tenseiga. Pulling the sword from its sheathe, he got rid of the beasts of the underworld and brought Rin back to life.
[ Personality ] :
Sesshomaru isn't called the Aristocratic Assassin for nothing. He is cold, calculating and, most of the time, he is utterly emotionless. The only time that he shows any emotion - positive or negative - is when he is either riled or around Rin. Once Sesshomaru is angry, there is very little that can stop him from enacting his revenge. In fact, only Naraku and Inuyasha have escaped his grasp (but he will continue to hunt both of them regardless).
When it comes to Rin, however, Sesshomaru shows an almost parental side (though I am cautious about using such terminology for him). He does care about the girl and he does look out for her well-being, but he is not an overly doting protector - and Rin doesn't ask him to be. Since she decided to follow him, she is rather self-sufficient. That trait alone is probably why she has endeared herself to the demon. Sesshomaru does not like playing the White Knight for just anyone.
Yet Rin reveals a deeper truth about the demon: he is not as cold as he seems. Sesshomaru does have a heart (probably inherited from his father) and he does have the capacity to care about a human. If anyone were to point this out to him, however, he would probably rend them in two. Therefore, sometimes, his actions do not follow his words, but one should never count on him having a dash of sentimentality. Despite what his father may have given him in that regard, Sesshomaru is in control of his emotional response to situations 24/7/365.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Sesshomaru has a number of powers. It would be best to put them in a list:
• He can strike at his enemies with his claws. On their own, they are quite deadly.
• To make his claws even more deadly, they secrete a poison that can dissolve just about anything.
• He can also create a whip made out of light (or lightning). It, like his claws, can cut through his enemies effortlessly.
• Additionally, the fur on his shoulder is actually apart of him. It too can be used as a weapon to throw his enemies off-guard.
• His most powerful ability is his Dragon Strike, however. Basically, the attack calls down lightning - which, in turn, seeks out the enemy like a beacon. It doesn't matter which sword he uses when he calls forth this power.
• As if all of those abilities weren't enough, Sesshomaru can fly.
• He also has super speed, endurance and exceptional reflexes.
• Additionally, he can teleport and heal quickly.
• And, to top it all off, he has Psionic abilities (powerful telepathy and telekinesis) and he can turn into a giant, drooling (also poisonous by the way) dog.
I believe his only weaknesses lie in his inability to sympathize/care/empathize with others (yet he does seem to be learning those skills somewhat with Rin and Jaken).
[ Other Important Facts ] :
• He has armor, which can regenerate itself when it is damaged.
• He also possesses Tenseiga, which he inherited from his father (though he would much prefer to have Tetsaiga). Tenseiga is the "heavenly sword". It can slice through the minions of the underworld (or other world) and bring a person or being back to life.
• Other than those items, he has his Kimono, his Sashinuki Hakama and his pointed, ankle-high boots.
• Oh and he wants his little brother dead.
[ Sample ] :
It wasn't often that Sesshomaru found himself in a place that he did not recognize. The last time such an event had occurred, the culprit had been his sword, Tenseiga. He hadn't minded terribly then. After all, the sword had protected his life, though he was still sore over the fact that it had been forced to do so in the first place.
Inuyasha.
The very name incensed him. His little brother was becoming more of a pain each and every day. Sesshomaru knew that it would be no challenge to kill him yet the Halfbreed's luck was remarkable.
Father, did you plan it this way?
Another wave of bitterness engulfed him at that thought. No. He would not allow himself to fall into the depths of dark memories. There were other, more pressing, matters to attend to.
Sitting up, Sesshomaru shook his silver hair out of his eyes. Placing his only hand on Tenseiga, he looked around the room warily. The sword wouldn't offer him much protection - unless, of course, he decided to use one of his ultimate powers. But, oddly, knowing that he had it made him feel stronger.
Tenseiga, I do believe that is the first time I have given you any credit.
The sword shook as if answering his comment. A brief look of amusement crossed Sesshomaru's face before he stood up and walked to the window. Upon seeing the fog, he tilted his head.
A miasma?
That would explain his memory loss, but -
How strong is it?
Reaching out his hand, he broke the window easily, allowing the fog to filter into the room. Observing it coolly, he narrowed his eyes.
No effect. It explains nothing.
So a number of questions remained. Picking up the device that was sitting beside his bed when he had awoken, he examined it more closely. Perhaps this could give him some answers.
