CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Portgas D. Ace
✧ SERIES: One Piece
✧ HISTORY:
Tada ✧ TIMELINE: End of chapter 550
✧ PERSONALITY:
More intelligent, polite and bearable than Luffy, his first meeting had Luffy's crewmates questioning whether or not Ace and Luffy were ever related; those who knew Gol D. Roger, Ace's father, often noted how alike Luffy and the late Pirate King are, Whitebeard said that Ace and his father did not share a personality. What Ace and Luffy did share though is recklessness and eating habits along with a love of partying - in one instance he boarded Buggy's ship thanks to the smell of food and simply decided to enjoy himself.
Ace has two very distinct traits that others notice about him. One is his narcolepsy where he can fall asleep in the middle of eating which causes strangers to wonder if he's died with Ace waking up as though nothing at all has happened. The second was pulling Dine and Dash routines which he began with Luffy and Sabo when they were children in the city of Goa.
Ace is able to be polite which is down to Makino and stems from Ace wanting to know how he should introduce him to Shanks who had saved his little brother Luffy - this is a marked change in his earlier personality as Ace was once rude and cold to strangers.
Living his life under the shadow of his father Roger, Ace was the first D. to question his right to exist and showed the fewest traits that were assoicated with the initial and he had problems all his life in dealing with his father and the legacy, denouncing Gol D. Roger as his father and claiming Whitebeard to be his only father. This is far different to how Luffy reacted when he found out about Monkey D. Dragon being his father especially given how dangerous Dragon is but it's worth noting that Luffy didn't grow up with the identity of his father known to him whereas Ace believed that it's natural if he were to die as nobody wanted the son of the devil, a son with such bad blood, to exist in the first place. Upon his death, Ace said that he'd never looked for fame and fortune and that instead all he'd wanted was an answer to his question about whether or not he should have been born as this is what held him back from dying with no regrets as he and Luffy had vowed to do as children along with the fact that he had a little brother to look out for. Ace still regretted not being alive to see Luffy achieve his dream but he believed that Luffy would accomplish it because he was his little brother.
Ace didn't back down from fights and wouldn't run once when facing an enemy and this lead some to think that Ace had a death wish but his willingness to fight was to prevent those he cared for getting injured which Dadan said came from his father, despite how much Ace loathed the man. While this stubborness allowed him to emerge victorious such as with Porchemy and Bluejam, it did cost him: his refusal to back down against Blackbeard ended with him in Impel Down awaiting execution and against Akainu it ended with his death.
If someone close to Ace was insulted he would be provoked by that and become violent; a conversation between Garp and Dadan showed that this is another trait inherited from Roger. As child, Ace got into many, many fights with anyone who insulted Roger resulting in severe injuries to the one doing the insulting. That temper got the better of him at times - the most notable example is when Whitebeard, the man Ace proclaimed to be his only father, is insulted. When the iron rule of the Whitebeard Pirates is broken by Blackbeard, a member of Ace's division, killing Fourth Division Commander Thatch, Ace takes off in pursuit when the man flees despite the rest of the crew and even Whitebeard trying to stop him. Ace later saw what that stubborness did when he found himself in the infamous Marine prison Impel Down, waiting to be executed. Ace was able to escape death on the scaffold due to Luffy and the pirates (escapees, Whitebeard pirates and the allies of Whitebeard), he stopped on the run to freedom when Akainu insulted Whitebeard. Ace turned to face him even as his crewmates desperately warned him to turn back and not get angry over it. Ace refused but was burned by Akainu's Devil Fruit powers. While Ace lay on the ground, Akainu saw the chance to attack Luffy but Ace jumped in to shield him and save his little brother.
In his dying words, Ace apologised to Luffy as Ace's last actions had allowed Luffy's efforts go to waste and he thanked everyone who came to save him and everyone who loved him even though the whole world had never wanted him to be born.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: (taken from the Mera Mera no Mi wiki page)
Ace consumed the Mera Mera no Mi which is a Logia type Devil's Fruit that gives him the ability to turn into fire at will as well as command it.
Kagerō (陽炎, Heat Haze): Ace shoots a stream of fire from the palm of his hand.
Hiken (火拳, Fire Fist): Ace's apparent signature attack and the source of his nickname "Fire Fist Ace". Ace turns his fist into flames and launches it as a column of fire at his target. This attack is so incredibly powerful that it is able to plow through several ships in one shot.
Higan (火銃, Fire Gun): Pointing the index and middle fingers of both hands at an opponent like guns, Ace turns his fingertips into flames and shoots bullets made of fire at them.
Enkai (炎戒, Flame Commandment): Ace amasses a large amount of flames around his body (usually by first swinging his outstretched hand around him, summoning the flames) in preparation for an attack. This is apparently the prerequisite technique before Ace can use Hibashira.
Hibashira (火柱, Fire Pillar): Used following Enkai. Ace shoots the collected flames straight upward, destroying a target above him.
Hotarubi (蛍火, Firefly Fire): Ace creates many small, glowing greenish fireballs that float around an enemy. The idea behind this attack's name is that before he attacks with them, the small fireballs look like fireflies in the air. This move is apparently used in preparation for Hidaruma.
Hidaruma (火達磨, Fiery Doll): After using Hotarubi to send the fireballs floating around in proximity with the enemy, Ace sends them all flying into the target(s) all at once, burning them
Shinka: Shiranui (神火 不知火, Sacred Fire: Mysterious Light at Sea): Ace hurls long lances made out of fire. The lances have the combined effect of simultaneously burning an opponent while piercing them.
Jūjika (十字火, Cross-fire): Ace puts his index fingers together in a cross shape before launching a cross-shaped column of flame directly at his opponent. In the anime, after crossing his fingers, a cross-shaped ray of light can be seen emanating from the fingers at the target followed by the column of fire.
Dai Enkai (大炎戒, Great Flame Commandment): A stronger version of Enkai where Ace summons great spiraling flames centered on his location before amassing it at a focused point (i.e. the palm of his hand) for a technique like Entei. In Unlimited Cruise, Ace activates this move by first bending his knees slightly and then placing the outstretched palm of his hand towards the ground (with his other hand gripping the wrist for support), where the flames manifest.
Entei (炎帝, Flame Emperor): Ace's ultimate technique. Ace creates a gigantic fireball resembling the sun and hurls it at his opponent to try to obliterate them.
Enjōmō (炎上網, Blazing Net): Ace creates a circle of fire around a selected area, preventing anyone from entering or leaving it.
Kyōkaen (鏡火炎, Mirror Blaze): Ace releases a firewall to block off an attack.
Shinka: Shiranui (神火 不知火, Sacred Fire: Mysterious Light at Sea?): Ace hurls long lances made out of fire. The lances have the combined effect of simultaneously burning an opponent while piercing them. This was first seen being used against Blackbeard when Ace was being pulled forward by the former's power.
Being Logia, Ace can turn his body into a natural element - in this case fire - at will. Because of this, he can avoid normal attacks by turning into fire and allowing them to pass through him. He can also burn people, depending on which attack he uses.
Like any user of a Devil’s Fruit, Ace has weaknesses. Devil’s Fruit users are unable to swim when submerged in water; rain and waves do not affect them but standing water does and if any part of a Devil’s Fruit users body is submerged, they cannot use their powers unless their body has been permanently altered by it in some way. Seastone is another weakness; this substance emits the same energies as the sea meaning it cancels out their abilites when in physical contact with a user.
The Yami Yami no Mi eaten by Blackbeard has the ability to nullify the powers of other Devil’s Fruit users which Ace experienced first hand in his fight on Banaro. Because Logia users in particular use their abilities for self-defense, they usually don’t have to take physical blows and when Ace was weakened by Blackbeard’s attacks, he was visibly shocked by this.
Haki (meaning ambition) can also weaken the attacks of a Logia Devil’s Fruit user.
While not portrayed in the main storyline, it was revealed in a flashback that Ace possesses Haōshoku Haki, which at the time he had no conscious control over. Much as Luffy used his Haki to knock out a crowd of Kuja warriors, Ace used his Haki to knock out the attacking members of Bluejam's pirate crew. Ace was first shown to possess it when during the Battle in Marineford, he witnessed Luffy unknowingly unleash his haki and remarked "You too?" It has not been revealed if he managed to hone this skill in adulthood, as he is never seen using it, nor any other form of Haki for that matter.

SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON:
[At first, the screen only shows a pair of black boots before a hand comes into view and then the freckled face of a confused young man, staring at the the device, head tilted to one side.]
Huh...strange thing...
[He stares at it for another couple of minutes before getting to his feet, standing in the middle of an unfamiliar street. Maybe it's like a broadcast Den Den Mushi or something.]
Hello, would anyone happen to know where I am? Is this somewhere on the Grand Line? Anyway, I'm Ace, nice to meet you and if you could maybe tell me where I am and give me directions to somewhere to get my head together and get a good meal I'd be very grateful.
[He pauses for a moment, sighs, then shrugs. It won't hurt to ask.]
Has anyone seen a guy in a straw hat? Goes by the name of Luffy, made of rubber, shoves chopsticks up his nose and dances, practically inhales food. If he's here then either point me to him or let him know that Ace is looking for him would you? Or any Whitebeard Commanders? Or crew? Oi, Marco? Marco you here?
[Another pause, this time some worry creeping in.]
Pops?
[He frowns and looks away to the side, trying to think of the best course of action, still relieved to be off the scaffold and out of the seastone.]
Better start looking for them, if Luffy's here he's bound to be lost by now.
✧ THIRD PERSON: from
somarium This wasn’t the execution platform, was the first thought Ace had upon waking up in the field, rubbing his head and groaning. Getting to his feet, he groaned and looked around. No execution platform, no Marines (especially Sengoku) and no Marineford in sight; best of all, no seastone cuffs around his wrists and for a moment he took the time to turn his hands and then the rest of his body into flames, his relief overtaking his confusion for a few minutes.
Upon turning back to normal, he noticed the scarecrow and stared at it for a few minutes in confusion, head tilted to one side before he tilted it the other way. The scarecrow did the same and well, that was unusual yes but sailing around the Grand Line with the Whitebeard Pirates tended to remove your shock upon seeing something weird. The thought of the crew sent a pang through him - it had been so long since he last saw them, when he went to look for that bastard Teach.
“Scarecrow,” he’d done stranger things than talk to inanimate objects, “do you know where I am?” He bowed and wasn’t overly surprised when it bowed slightly in return. The scarecrow said nothing and he sighed, stuffed his hands in his pockets and rocked back and forth on his heels slightly, assessing the situation. He had no clue where he was so finding a town of some sort would be a good idea, hopefully a town devoid of Marine presence and where he could find out what was actually happening. One hand went to adjust his hat and he frowned upon realising it wasn’t there. Probably back on Banaro or completely destroyed. Just another thing to add to the list of shit Teach was responsible for; he’d be adding this too.
“I need to find a town, see if I can get some news or something,” he muttered to himself and glanced up at the arm that pointed to what looked like a village. With a grin he bowed once more to the scarecrow and headed off in the direction it pointed, hands still in his pockets when he encountered something that definitely hadn’t been there before and plucked it free before frowning at it after a few minutes. Best to be on his guard on the way to the village just in case and then work it out once he didn’t need to be so alert anymore.
