The word spatula is a diminutive of a late Latin word, and means "little sword". Officially, they're both called spatulas, but as Katy pointed out, the metal/hard plastic ones are frequently called flippers to avoid confusion.
I dunno, I always called the rubber one the spatula. I never considered the other spatula... though now that I think of it, I don't know what I DID call it.... the flippy thing?
