Having slammed the door in Elena’s face, Caroline stared at her reflection in the glass pane. She could hear the heavy sigh of her friend as she exited from the porch. Elena’s feet moved slowly down the steps away from the Bennett house. It was not intentional to hurt Elena, Caroline thought to herself.

She turned herself around and walked the length of the hallway-back to where Abby Bennett was not yet conscious-she heard foot faults scramble away from the opening.

Entering into the room, Caroline noticed Bonnie, bending her knees, by her mother’s bed. Caroline walked over to place a hand on her friend’s shoulder, she said, “Your mother will wake soon,” she paused, unsure of her next words, she added cautiously, “this doesn’t have to be the end, Bon.”

Choked sobs emanated from Bonnie, her body hunched closer to her mother’s limp form on the bed. She hiccupped back tears as two stray wet streaks had escaped unnoticed. Caroline wrapped an arm around Bonnie, pulled her into a hug. It helped that Bonnie accepted her friend’s hug-despite being a vampire-their friendship was still important to her. Bonnie wrapped her own arms around Caroline as she cried into her shoulder.

On their knees by the elder Bennett’s bed, Caroline tried to hush the sobbing Bonnie with soothing words. It took a little more than a minute to calm Bonnie, but Caroline finally got her to calm down, sit in a rocking chair, and drink some hot tea with lemon. The tissues were also available after Bonnie overstayed her welcome on Caroline’s wet shoulder. This prompted a laugh from Bonnie, she whispered, “I’m sorry. Did you have a hot date tonight?”

Looking down at her tank top, she blushed as she thought about her latest meeting with Klaus. This was not what she wanted to think about with Bonnie worried about her mom, she shook her head and said, “Nope, it’s an unusually warm evening tonight, and I needed to stay cool.”

Not sure whether Bonnie would buy that half-truth or not, Caroline held her breath as she waited for her friend to size up her story. The inquisitive brown eyes in almond shaped face narrowed as she eyed Caroline, she knew something was up but wasn’t saying anything.

Instead, Bonnie brought her attention down to her tea cup, she took a long sip and hiccupped again as the tea inside splashed her in the face. A giggle unexpectedly came from Bonnie much to Caroline’s surprise. It erupted into a full-on laugh when the spoon hit her in the nose, and Caroline started laughing as Bonnie laughed harder.

Not sure why they were laughing, Caroline smiled at her friend’s mirth. It was good to see Bonnie smile after the events in the last few hours.

A gasp came from the bed-Abby Bennett was awake-Caroline looked to Bonnie, her previous mirth had disappeared, replaced again by the same melancholic state. She placed a hand on her friend’s shoulder and said, “You don’t have to be here for this,” she added, “I can talk her through the transformation if you are squeamish.”

Bonnie Bennett shook her head to signal she was staying. It was probably better this way, but Caroline worried for Bonnie’s sanity. We can’t shield her from the process forever, Caroline thought.

Looking dazed and slightly confused, Abby stared first at her daughter and then at Caroline, her voice hoarsely said, “What happened? Where am I?”

Nervously, Caroline left her friend’s side and went to sit on the end of Abby’s bed. She smoothed out the covers before she spoke, “You are at yours and Bonnie’s home. You are in transition right now.”

“Transition?!?”

Caroline explained the process of becoming a vampire. The gory details were not lost on Bonnie or her mother, they listened with unabashed, open mouths.

Concluding her speech, she added, “You don’t have to go through with this, Mrs. Bennett,” she gestured for Bonnie to come up behind her, “I’ll leave you two alone to discuss the options.”

She left the room, shut the door behind her, and leaned against the wood. Not wanting to overhear the Bennett women’s private conversation, she left the door and went to stand outside.

The Bennett porch provided some relief to her. Caroline just told her friend’s mother that she had to choose between eternal life and mortal death. As if in answer to her troubles, the wind blew cool over her arms. Even though the cold and heat no longer bothered her, her humanity shivered all the same.

While she was lost inside her head, her mind wandered to Tyler. His voice mail was the last thing she heard from him, but it wasn’t enough. So much had happened in less than twenty four hours, those romantic drawings that flashed through her head gave her pause. That was Klaus, he tried to kill you, get a grip. Caroline shook herself of the memory when Bonnie came up behind her.

Caroline stood with her back to the house when Bonnie said, “It’s decided.”

Almost jumping out of her skin, Caroline turned around to see the look on Bonnie’s face. Obviously it meant that Abby decided to go out the same way as her own father, Caroline thought, envious of her friend’s composure. She said out loud, “Are you going to be okay, Bonnie?”

Bonnie nodded despite the situation, she added, “My mom wasn’t going to become a vampire after what she saw tonight with Esther.”

Not sure what to say to that, Caroline turned back to stare out at the street. Speaking of Esther, it brought back her earlier conversations with Klaus both inside and outside the Mystic Grill. The helpless way he looked at her, confusion on his face as he stood up from the bench trying to understand what was happening to him. She realized after he left to help Kol that she was also being used by Damon…again.

Without thinking of her company, she slammed her fist hard into the railing on the porch which busted the front railing in two parts. Bonnie looked at Caroline, confusion shown on her face. She asked, “How could you lie to me earlier?”

Looking down at the destruction she wreaked on the railing, she blushed and apologized, “I didn’t think you would notice.”

Bonnie smiled again, she clapped a hand on Caroline’s shoulder, exclaimed, “Of course I noticed, we’ve been friends since kindergarten, Care,” she added, “that will never change.”

Collapsed under the pressure, Caroline fell into Bonnie who caught her. She was exhausted.
