Make sure that the house has a history of a dry basement. I've learned the importance of this after all of the flooding people have been having in their basements due to all of the rain we have been having lately.
Actually, I was thinking about how much fun it could be to build a house; first, I'd dig about a meter and a half down over most of the lot; then I'd build up concrete or adobe walls over that, and cover it over with dirt again. Then, over the front of the hill, I'd build the obvious-looking house, and I'd put a shed in the backyard, over the back part of the hill. The basement would be accessible through a trapdoor in the shed, and through a couple staircases in the house, but the staircases would be in the secret hallways accessible through hidden doors in various places in the bedroom -- one bedroom might have a secret door in the back of the closet (Narnia!), while another might have a bookshelf door, and another, a trapdoor in the carpet.
Sign that I have been in South America too long: My initial response when I read this was "that's a good choice...it's much more shady and tranquil than Buenos Aires, but still just an hour and a half away on the bus from all the big city excitement."
And then I realized you meant the one in Maryland, not Argentina.

And the house we've decided to make an offer on is at least somewhat shady and tranquil.
