There's an interesting book that looks at the biochemistry of enlightenment and transcendent religious experience called Why God Won't Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief. It's a little dated now (barely turn of the Millennium, man!), and definitely imperfect, but it provides a lot of interesting food for thought. I will, however, admit that I haven't had time to finish it in its entirety (SO. MUCH. READING on my plate) which is sad considering it's a little guy.
I've never achieved enlightenment. I've had some great epiphanies, but enlightenment? No. I do however find the idea fascinating that enlightenment and transcendence may be nothing more than the brain's reaction to the conscious shutting down of sensory input.
