Character: Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ethel Cordelia Middleford
Timeline: Chapter 58
Personality: As the daughter of the beautiful but fearsome Marchioness Frances Middleford, one would think that Elizabeth Middleford has grown to be a proper and respectable lady of the Victorian era. Lizzie is, however, still very much a child in many ways, even as she works toward this goal. A bright and exuberant young girl, she is notorious for being an adamant lover of cute things and people, regarding them with the sort of ecstatic glee that might make anyone dizzy just watching her (the Phantomhive servants dub her the 'crazy girl' because of this). Lizzie also displays many other child-like qualities that showcase just how much growing up she needs to do, such as throwing temper tantrums until she can be pacified with what she wants, or insisting on getting things done the way she wants.
Part of this is a farce, however. Under this slightly selfish, childish, and girly exterior, there is a much more mature young woman, both physically and emotionally. Physically, Lizzie has disciplined herself in the art of fencing and swordfighting under her mother's strict training. Originally Lizzie regarded it as something she needed to learn for the sake of pleasing her mother-- but after Ciel's family died in the mansion fire, her abilities became more of an insurance, something that could protect Ciel should he ever need it as he forged ahead as the force behind his new company and his new life. Despite the Victorian mindset that girls should strictly be protected instead of being protectors, she wanted to and still wants to to become a woman that can protect him as he struggles into adulthood. And in this mindset, she sacrifices in small, innumerable ways to allow him to take those steps forward. She cares more deeply for him than he might ever come to realize.
Her understanding of Ciel's emotions and motives is sometimes flawed, considering how complex they are now, but as the girl he had once played with in his childhood, she has a deep understanding of his past, and is probably the one who understands his pain the best.
Background: Being born to the Marquis and Marchioness Middleford, Lizzie had a very privileged childhood. As was typical of the nobility class in Victorian England, she was engaged early on in her youth to her first cousin, Ciel Phantomhive. As children, the two of them didn't concern themselves too much with this knowledge, only finding each other's company as playmates fun and memorable. Almost all of her time outside of her own house was spent at the Phantomhive mansion with him-- the two of them spent many a day happily playing with Ciel's dog Sebastian, or with their aunt Madam Red when she visited.
And then, on the day of Ciel's tenth birthday, the horrible news came that the Phantomhive mansion had burned to the ground, leaving Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive dead, and Ciel presumed dead as well. Lizzie had to grow up a little, in the few months that Ciel was (unknown to her) in slavery. With her childhood friend, cousin, and fianceé gone, she was heart broken, and wasn't the same girl after it.
But then, naught a month after the tragedy, Ciel returned. Lizzie went to visit him, ecstatic that he was still alive...but when she did get to see him face to face again, she immediately noticed that he had changed. He was much colder, more emotional...it was as if he was a completely different person. With his father dead, Ciel now held the title of earl at the age of ten, and Lizzie could only leave his well-being in the hands of his new, black-clad butler, Sebastian Michaelis.
Very slowly, with frequent visits, she was able to get Ciel to open up at least a little bit. Now, three years later, she is starting to get an inkling of the extent of the work he takes on. Lizzie is continuing her efforts to make Ciel happy again, and is slowly coming to terms with the person that he has changed into. In Ciel's latest adventure, Lizzie has been unwittingly drawn into the soon-to-be tragedy of the Campania's sinking, as well as the mysterious and dangerous situation with the reanimated corpses housed within its hull. She's been forced to show her true colors to Ciel as well.
Abilities/Additional Notes: As a normal human, she has no supernatural abilities whatsoever, though she is recognized as a genius in fencing and swordplay. Other domestic skills include but are not limited to things associated with her nobility, such as etiquette lessons, lady-like sports like croquet, as well as embroidery, knitting, and the like.
Sample Journal Post: [The video turns on to reveal a blonde, pigtailed girl standing out in the middle of the road. She is dressed in a thin, slightly bloodied underdress, wearing a young boy's navy blue jacket over it. She's soaking wet, as well. All in all she's a rather strange sight to behold, and the two rapiers she's brandishing don't help matters.]
What? This isn't the Campania...! Where did all the...?
[She furrows her brow after a moment.]
Why does this place seem so familiar?
[And then she tenses in realization of something, whirling around so quickly her long pigtails and underdress fly out around her. Her grip on the rapiers tightens.]
Ciel?! Sebastian! Where are you?
Sample RP: Lizzie felt incredibly disoriented. She wasn't in a sinking cruise line ship surrounded by the sea as she should be. No, instead she was on land, a near-barren wasteland all around her. The questions of "how" and "why" immediately came to her lips, but there wasn't anyone to answer her. Everyone was gone.
The realization hit her hard, physically winded her and made her ache. Her knees buckled under her and she sunk to the ground, her hair fluttering down with her as she hunched over.
If she was here, then she wasn't there. She wasn't protecting him. So she had failed.
Failed. Failed. Failed. And the price of that failure was--!
She started sobbing.
"Ciel..."
