How is it that everyone I know that had an NES knew to do this? Was it in the owners manual somewhere saying that the system could be thwarted by microscopic dust particles inside the cartridge, or did it just pass by word of mouth?

I totally used to blow into those damn cartridges. I'd even blow in the opening of the system if it still wasn't working.
