Just three months ago, everything in Garnet til Alexandros' life had seemed as perfect as it could be. Unconventional, perhaps, but as perfect as she could have hoped for. Now, it was all falling apart, and the girl who took life head-on wished she could just run away from it all.
She was ill. Doctor after doctor examined her, and they all had the same answer. They could find nothing wrong with her. Garnet was not stupid, and neither were those around her. Having no diagnosis did not mean she wasn't ill - it merely meant that there was no likely cure.
Amazing how much could change in three months. She deteriorated quickly. The once strong and vibrant woman was reduced to a sickly, pale shadow of her former self, restricted to her bed. Each day was harder than the last, each morning bringing less and less strength than the day before. Faces, and gentle words blended together with dark and twisted dreams.
She couldn't stand it much longer.
These seemed far, distant, faded memories as she felt the cold and pain in her back. Weary eyes opened, blinked, and slowly came into focus. Strange buildings towered over her, some of them crumbling. Dark, and cold, even with the sun in the sky. She shivered, shifting to her feet, and pushing herself up. She clearly was not dressed for this weather, wearing the same yellow silk nightgown she'd been wearing last time she could recall - long belled sleeves, and down to her ankles, a well-meaning attempt to keep her warm. She was barefoot, and winced as she stepped on various bits of rubble and rough ground. Even as the world titled sideways and she slumped against the nearest wall (hard, cold), she couldn't help but think she hadn't had this much energy in months.
Determined, she put one foot in front of the other. Over and over again, this same movement, her arms wrapped 'round herself in a feeble attempt to block out the cold.
"Hello?" she called out, to anyone who might here her, the sound of her own voice a much missed sound. "Is anyone there?"
