It was the second time in two days that Mia left the apartment without telling Diego where she was going, but it had to be done. She knew that he had worried about her--that he was probably even angry with her--after the previous night. She didn't blame him, but she was not ready to let him into her confidance, not yet. She could not conceive of doing anything that might put him in more danger than he was already. She could not conceive of losing him again.
It had been raining on and off all week but the early evening was fairly clear, the sun close to disappearing completely as Mia made her way to Union Square Park, baseball bat in hand. She hoped that Sora and Flute would remember to bring weapons of their own, and felt a moment's turmoil for asking them to meet her somewhere so exposed...should have gone to one of their apartments. Except that she knew Sora at least was living with companions, and Flute seemed to have that bad-tempered cat-man looking after her, and this was not a conversation that could be had in front of anyone.
She arrived at the park and went to the statue of the Marquis on his horse where they'd agreed to meet, keeping her eyes and ears trained for any signs of her young friends or crabs.
