Itachi let his chakra sink to normal levels when he felt Sasuke approach. Two butterflies waltzed in his stomach, more out of excitement than worry. It was almost over. His time was almost here. No more suffering, no more pain. Just like last time, he kept perfectly still through it all, standing at the far edge of the roof, waiting.

His eyes bled to crimson as soon as his brother came into sight, following his every move. He didn't wait for him to ask questions before throwing out his own.

"Do you hate me?"

It wasn't enough. Itachi could see that he knew hatred, but feeling it was not someone anyone could force on themselves. Sasuke make the mistake of trying to glare his hatred, when blocking off all emotion would have hidden his lies entirely. He was forcing it, and that made him look like an out-of-breath twelve year old standing in the hallway of a cheap Fire Country hotel again.

Itachi didn't know what he had expected from coming here. Just as it was cruel to ask a child to kill him, so it was with a man who didn't hate him. But what else was he to do? There was no time left to force Sasuke to hate him. No time at all. They would both vanish from existence soon enough and then there would be nothing. Even if Sasuke would only suffer a little bit, it was still the last thing he would feel. He had already done it once. But...

"Would you kill me again if you had the chance?" A challenge.
