Why the FUCK would you say repeatedly that you would happily supply a reference for me, tell me that I'm doing fine and "am where I should be" throughout our working relationship, and on evals, but then when the time comes to put up and do what you said you'd do, you send me an e mail asking if I'm dead set on an ER career or wouldn't you maybe ( Read more... )

Holy crap. If the person thought you were unsuited to it they should have said something while you were training .. What an idiot!

I have to think that perhaps he was saying this because I'm still looking for work 3 months post graduation, and he's thinking I've been turned down for several ER jobs. I had texted him and told him a few days ago that I had some interviews coming and might be asking for references, and he was like, cool, I'll be watching! And in this same e mail he asked me if I'd heard back from the other interviews yet. So in my reply I told him that this was pertaining to one, and that the other was upcoming, and to strongly reassure him that ED was what I wanted to do.

His reply was Ok great, I'll do it for you sometime tomorrow, which he did. But oh my god he just about gave me a heart attack. I'm only waiting for one reference, and hopefully I'll be getting a job offer. I really really HATE waiting... just for the record. :p

Just find someone else and move on. Is the Ed the easiest place to start a job? No. But if its what you really want no one should talk you out of it. You'll just have to be resourceful and find another reference. If you get a Med/surg job instead you should see it as a huge learning experience that will make you a great ED nurse. A level 1 trauma center ED is gonna be a lot different than a small town hospital ED so I'm not sure what you're looking for. I just got turned down for a tele/critical care job in cardiothoracic because i only had a year of med/surg so if you can't get into the ED yet don't take it personally. There's a lot of stuff to learn everywhere in a hospital. You admit people all night from all over the hospital on med/surg. Not as dull as you may think at a level 1 anyway. You'll even admit patients on standby to the icu. And you decide if they should be evaluated and should go.

Regardless don't let anyone talk you out of where you should be. Taking a med/surg job first is just an old nursing tradition. But you ( ... )

He did it, but now I'm waiting for a slow employment reference.... So frustrating.
