on telling stories about disasters

The Saturday before Easter, I saw a play. Specifically, I saw a musical about the sinking of the Titanic.

It was-well, let's not mince words. It was pretty bad. The acting was patchy, the music was unimpressive at its best moments, and the story was essentially nonexistent.

But it made me think, as you might expect, about the somewhat famous movie of the same event made a few years ago. )

movie: titanic, public post, theater, meta: writing

I dislike Cameron's Titanic, partly because I don't care about Rose and Jack - especially Jack. And if you don't care about them, then there's nothing else worthwhile about it ( ... )

I actually just watched Cameron's Titanic this morning, mostly because I'd recently seen the ABC series, a four-parter written by the same guy that did Downton Abbey, and kept dwelling on it the same way you did after seeing the musical ( ... )

because minor characters are my bread and butter, and we saw enough of Fabrizio and Tommy and little Cora and Trudy and Mr. Andrews and the captain that it hurts when they die
Oh my god, Elizabeth, why are you perfect ♥

I'm about four kinds of horrifyingly late in replying to this comment, but whatever. Mostly I just agree with everything you said. ♥

I love Cameron's Titanic like no tomorrow, that's all I've got to say about that. I always cry and I care deeply about the characters and the soundtrack is gorgeous and that freaking film made me read several Wikipedia articles about Titanic when I was younger. ♥

I admit I'm one of those girls that went to the cinema back then, like, ten times in a row and I cried EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I still cry today (being almost 30 and all grown up and stuff) every time I watch it. Like full out bawling my eyes out, sobbing, clutching at pillows. It's pretty horrible to watch me watching Titanic, I guess. ^^*

So I honestly can't objectively talk about that movie. Rose and Jack were my first big pairing-love and I have no words for how much I adored them. I feel in love with both of them at the same time (a first hint at my sexual orientation? ;D) and I never really stopped.

Somehow I can't really see the whole thing working in a musical ... ^^**
