The whole canon vs non-canon thing seems to be something of an entirely new generation fans. I wouldn't say you started it..you just always stress that you stick to the original Japanese scripts and manga, since the English version changes things. I really don't remember any mention at ALL about canon when I was getting heavy into anime, 7/8 years ago, nor anytime in between. I wasn't even entirely sure what the term meant until like six months ago, when I went looking it up. I have to assume it was something that sort of evolved out of fanfiction writers and fanfic.net ( ... )

Yeah, I think I wandered around the online communities for awhile, witnessing (and sometimes hopelessly trying to fight) the ignorance and/or stupidity...thankfully, the latest incarnation of DaizEX's forums escapes this seemingly unavoidable downfall that all DB communities face (which, thanks, it's nice to hear something beyond "omfg what if broyli and goku fuzed and fout suparman lol!!11 ( ... )

I hear you though I can at least understand not wanting to hear it in Japanese, it want until I hit 17 or so before I was ever really able to accept subtitled translations, its a cultural thing, I think. Heck even now 90% of the time I watch anime, its dubbed. Sure theres the occasional stinker dub like DBZ, but usually they arent that bad and its just easier to focus into something spoken in a native tongue. I can't entirely blame people for not liking the idea of watching subs, I can however say that its very juvenile a thing to outright refuse to watch something subbed. Theres a diffrence between personal preffrence and openness to things outside of ones preffrence.

Still I digress, I understand you wholly, theres a lot of sillyness from people just getting into DBZ.

Depends on what culture you're from. XD Over here in Belgium 90% of the foreign TV shows & movies are subtitled, the other 10% aimed at tiny youngsters. So reading subtitles really isn't a bother for me since well, I grew up on them.
(That and I like to watch things as closely as possible to the director/artist's original vision)

of course theres a diffrence in diffrent cultures, hence why I said its a cultural thing. Of course exposing it early in forming years may be a root cause here as well. I know that when I was 13 I wretched towards the sub of Appleseed I accidentally rented, when I was 20, and got crouching tiger hiudden dragon on DVD I wretched at the english dub. On my 21st birthday, I wretched when I bought the Gundam Movie trilogy which was subbed only. Its just been a developmental thing in my case anyway, personally I like to see stuff both ways with exceptions (DBZ I only watch subbed, Slayers I only watched dubbed due to my pure hatred of Megumi Hayashibaras acting "skills").
