Ready for Summer

Jun 17, 2013 13:27

Spent the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June doing a combination of long distance and in person training, and I'm officially ready to start teaching on Saturday. For the first time in three years, I'll be earning a full time paycheck. That's exciting, even if it is only for the summer. Training for my community college job that ( Read more... )

Well, you've been busy since last I head from you. Glad to hear all is going well with you. NYC does sound like the best choice for you at the moment with job opportunities, support and knowledge of the city. You should be able to land something there.

I think it sounds busier than it actually is! :) There's been a lot of downtime in between. But I'm glad I have stuff to do now, unlike the first month or so when I first got home. I'm really, really hoping I can move back to NYC within a year or two. Finding full time work, especially at the salary I'll need to live there, is really hard. But I won't know unless I try, right?

I'm impressed with how methodical you are... Which sounds like faint praise, but it's not! I have never had the sort of determined, lets do what we gotta do attitude you seem to have, and I think that's what you need to succeed in your chosen career! You have to keep plugging away.

Thanks! :) As far back as I can remember, I've liked to do things pretty methodically. But it was probably working in film that really cemented the "whatever it is, get it done somehow and get it done now" part, because it's either that or get fired! I just have to keep reminding myself to take the long-term perspective when it comes to being a writer. It's a long slog that will hopefully pay off in the future, if I keep at it now.

I really miss you at the moment. Had lunch with Culf today and it was so weird that you weren't there and then to come back and read this and its like its finally sunk in that you aren't going to be here for another few years, I dunno I think in my head I was being a bit like Arthur, thinking oh Douglas will sort this out and it will be fine and you'll be back in a year or two and now its like okay thats not going to happen.

But yay for all the good and positive stuff going on in your life at the moment. Who are you ghostwriting for at the moment? The community college teaching sounds great, lots of experience for you and helping out students who need it.

Best of luck with moving to NYC and selling your work :)

She didn't tell me you had lunch together! She's been holding out on me.

Well, I may not be able to live there for another few years, but I am planning on visiting next year, sometime in May, I'm hoping. And I'd like to visit as often as possible! (I just got a British Airways credit card, so I'll be able to earn frequent flyer miles with that!)

I wish I had a Douglas that could just sort everything out, but moving back to London is still in my long-term plan, and I'm thinking in terms of years not decades. If only I didn't need a visa! Why did all my family have to move the US back in the 1700s? Sigh.

And if you ever can make it to the US, you're welcome to stay with me, whether I'm in PA or back in NYC. :)
