Mold and mildew

with mold and mildew growing in our trailer, we are contemplating not moving back in. (duh huh?) Liz told me that more and more folks are moving out of the park. I'm contemplating getting a storage unit, hiring a few of my friends *hint hint* and packing a truck and moving out as well.. key word, contemplating ( Read more... )

The mold never really comes out 100%. This is why some towels can smell like mildew straight from the dryer. I can suggest a product like odoban to wash them initially. I did not do this at all because of my allergies.

The other things, non fabric, can be sat out in the sun and sprayed with bleach water. We did not do this, again because of allergies.

We are seeing this as a clean slate. It does not make it right but does make it easier to deal with.

Actually, in most cases, that means your washer has the mildew. My husband and I are both deathly allergic to mold/mildew so we are very careful to leave the washer open between cycles, run bleach through it once a month, and almost always toss some vinegar in with the laundry.

in my case it was IN the towels. Machine is only a year old. I do vinegar in all loads & never leave it closed.

To be safe, no fabrics were really saved in the house except those I know for a fact were 110% dry.

I was going to suggest the same thing as the article... and vinegar works wonders on everything too!

I have had a lot of success with vinegar. I take the clothes outside and use a stiff brush to brush off any visible growths. I then flap them like crazy (I actually have to wear a mask for this, fyi.) If it isn't blazingly sunny, I take a blowdryer to them to kill the mildew. I then toss everything in the washer on HOT (ours has a Sanitize feature which rocks) with a long splash of vinegar. AJ and I are both seriously allergic to mold/mildew but we have never had an issue with being sick after this. If the stuff smells sour, then you will have to try again. I've never had to run things more than twice.

I just hope we can save some of the clothing. if we loose them, then we loose them. there is no way in hell we are going to move back into my trailer.

I hate to say this, and not trying to come off ugly, but if over half the hispanic folks are moving out, I think it's time we do. they are more resilient and stubborn, when it comes to stuff like this, then most of us are.

so Im taking this as a sign to move the hell out. Uhaul will be my friend when I get a storage unit :)

I second the vinegar and also baking soda sometimes helps.
