Opinions for Living??

My boyfriend of many years and I are moving to Halifax to attend Dalhousie (or well, for me to attend Dalhousie) in August - and we've decided to live at Ogilvie on the Park. We've done a lot of internet research for other options (as far as I can tell) and I think this is a good fit for us. We've spoken with the property management people and the ( Read more... )

Ogilvie is a nice block, however, it is quite a hike from Dal. Indeed, it's quite a hike just to the nearest bus stop. I don't know if that's a consideration. I do think it is within the zone where you would not be eligible for a parking spot at Dal. Also, no balconies, which is a major shame, considering the location.

I've known a few people who have lived there, but I haven't lived there myself. Some random thoughts:
- If you and your boyfriends ride bikes (both for fun and to get to and from school) this is pretty awesome location.
- This building is, for the most part, a grown person building. Which is good (it's quiet and nice) and bad (it's kind of pricey).
- It is not super close to convenient bus routes (it's like a 10-15 minute walk away from the #10 which runs to Dal) and is not super close to downtown. It's by no means far away from these things but it's not close either.
- It's owned/managed by Universal Properties which is a big corporate landlord. It's not the worst landlord in the city but it's certainly not an above average one.

Thank you so much for your thoughts!
This is looking to be less of a great idea/location... Didn't know about distance from bus routes/not actually downtown and convenient/uphill-ness (not the kind of thing Googlemaps tells you...)

I guess I should change my original post for opinions about other locations - keep looking for a bit before we put a deposit down! =(

If you're willing to spend $1k a month then you likely have many options. My partner and I currently live at LeMarchant Tower and it's basically on the Dal campus and is directly next to stops for the #1 bus route (the main downtown route which also runs to the West End Mall. It's also two minutes away from the stop for the #10 which goes to the Dartmouth Bay location, although it's a 40 minute commute from here to that store.)

I don't know what the price is here for a 1 bedroom but there's a craig's list listing for a sublet for $850 in the building. The building is clean and its a security building. It's in the student area of town so it can be a bit loud, but the building itself is mostly quiet.

I can't find the management company's contact info online but I can go find it if you want.

With that kind of budget for a one-bedroom, you could be living across the street from almost anywhere down town. If you are happy with 1-bedroom flats or 1-bdrm units within a house (as opposed to a 1-bedroom in a fancy apartment building), you can definitely find very nice places between $700-$1000, all included.
(I'm assuming when you say 1-bedroom, you mean there's also a kitchen, living room and bathroom.)

In our own apartment hunting, we were especially impressed with this company. They operate a number of properties in a range of styles, (ranging from gorgeous, to average, mediocre, or not-so-great) so you still want to look into each place before making a final decision. But all of our dealings with them were through a guy named Tony, who turned out to also be the guy you call when you need repairs done or get something fixed. And he was just such a frank, straightforward, go-to person, that we couldn't help but be impressed.

We also met one of the sons in the family who run Paramount Management. (His father started the ( ... )
