Talked about this a lot off-LJ with folks, but here's another unfortunate reminder that you do not mess with the Grand Canyon. Not even a little bit.

WaPo article -- local backpacker dies hiking in the Grand Canyon

He was hiking alone, and was only carrying "enough" water for his route.
