they'll do shuttle service

my guess is that, given the extent of the work, it makes more sense to do it over a holiday (longer time without rush hour service) than in does to try and close the stations during the work week...

I understand the logic of over a weekend.

I just don't understand "at an airport over a well-traveled holiday weekend."

I think I'd be far less offended if they were wrapping up Monday Morning, rather than Tuesday morning. They are going to screw over a ton of people who booked flights back in to make sure they are at work on Tuesday, unlike us slackers who can take an extra day off ;-)

but wrapping up monday morning would be the same thing as doing it on a normal weekend. i think they NEED the full time.

and really, if it's anything like the closing of ft totten a few weeks ago, then they'll have shuttles running every five minutes.

transentient might also be onto something; metro's a little under the gun, i think...

You mean when they had the Red Line hunk of the station shut down from Friday night to Monday morning every weekend in August?

Having gone through that ever weekend in August, they could have communicated little things better.

Like, y'know, not having some guy come onto the shuttle at Fort Totten (the half-way point in the shuttle run) and telling people that there was no more Red Line Service. And he didn't clarify when panicked people asked if he meant just at that station (which was expected) or for the night.

Yeah, it's going to be a mess.

that would be awesome. Or at least better than the real reasons . . .

Probably the easiest weekend of the year to avoid actual traffic at that airport -- I think I remember reading that it was busier during the week than over weekends, due to all the gov't travel.

I would not be surprised to hear this verified.

Also, I generally find it much easier to get someone to give you a ride to the airport on the weekend than it is during the week (plus traffic is better), so from the traveller perspective this seems like the lesser evil.

Which doesn't mean it's not sucky for you. But, you know, "the greater good" and all that. (Yes, I have been watching Hot Fuzz way too much.)

This has now become a Big Deal in WaPo. I am amused at just how big a deal, since the only thing that has been done poorly is that riders were not specifically informed earlier. The recent press release confirms that Labor Day weekend is one of the slowest times for both the airport and metro ridership.

Good decision, bad communication. But you didn't seem to be upset about the communication.

I thought the lack of communication in advance was obvious since they just announced it right before the weekend.. My real issue was with monday. The weekend itself may have been fairly light, but monday, not so much.
