Hey I was at MoS the other day. Didn't see you around, though. Got chatted up by some random kid; was annoyed. Okay, back to reading your interesting rant.
I think a lot of what you're talking about is more the faults of society at large. Especially in the last twenty or twenty-five years, the line between news and entertainment has blurred, corporations have bought and sponsored more and more parts of the world, and this has all resulted in our society being lulled into self-satisfaction, concerned only with the shallow. At the risk of being hyperbolic, we're entering an age of anti-utopia akin to the society in Brave New World. Teenagers only know the world of the 90s and the new millenium.
But beyond that, there are biological changes all children and teenagers go through, and I like to think I give them the benefit of the doubt, because I don't know the situation at home, at school, or if that child has other issues they have to deal with. Children and teenagers are most definitely people. Yeah, they can be jerks, and for that they should be dealt with in a firm but fair and compassionate manner.
I agree to a large part with the above comment. No, children and teenagers aren't adults, but they certainly are people. And all people are different. At my high school there were a lot of rules, many of which were illogical, inane, and there are plenty of people in positions with authority that are on their own power trip. Like many people, I'm sure, I went to school with a bunch of...well, retards like that girl, but I wasn't one of those kids, and I resented being treated like one of them when I was in fact able to be reasonable and mature. I do believe teenagers should have rights. At 16 you can work a job, and earn your own money, and buy your own possessions. If they aren't illegal, I don't think schools should be allowed to take them from you permanently or damage them. Generally I believe an over exertion of authority only increases the tension, but yeah there are a lot of obnoxious tards out there. It is, however, important to make certain distinctions. Is all.
First off I'll admit what initially attracted me to comment on this entry was the fact that you were listening to LCD Soundsystem. I'm guessing GTA IV has something to do with it.
Oh how I wish I had an SNES instead of a Genesis during the 16-bit days. Thanks JeeBzz for the Virtual Console although it saddens me that neither Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Chrono Trigger are not part of that disappointingly limited selection (only 32 titles compared to 50 Genesis titles...COME THE FUCK ON!!!!). The only explanation for the Chrono Trigger omission is the upcoming DS update for which I will be purchasing based on the hype.
Your interpretation of Super Metroid is on point. It's more of an experience since the depth in gameplay variation is unprecedented. To this day I've never completed the game at 100% and marvel at those who can do so while within 2 hours.
I don't know about Donkey Kong Country. I always thought it was too much of a simple platformer tacked on with pretty graphics. The sequel had more depth, was much harder, and

The SNES era was truly the greatest for console gaming. The SNES itself was amazing. Despite it being "edgy," I honestly never saw what was so great about the Genesis except its first-gen arcade-perfect ports of games like Altered Beast. Still, despite having been the inferior 16-Bit system, the Genesis had its share of excellent titles.
I too have yet to gather 100% in Super Metroid. I cannot believe people can get that within two hours. That's a lot of sequence breaking and glitch exploiting! To this day I think no other 2D game has come to the size and depth of Super Metroid's Zebes. 'Tis labyrinthine and endless.
Haha, the DKC drop was an inside joke! Ultimately, though, indeed, 'twas no more than a gorgeous platformer... with impossibly CD-quality music.
The reason Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island made it not in the list is because I was discussing primarily game narrative. Though both games are driven by a central motivation, neither really tells a deep, deep story. Actraiser, on

I definitely see that. We've failed to learn from every lesson from every "nega-topian" novel. We seemingly slipped right into it....
True, compassion is important. That is an excellent point.

I think my biggest reason for saying "children and teenagers shouldn't count" is to remove them as a target demographic.
