I too have been "let go" as a casual temp VSR from the Museum of Science, Boston!

...They got me before I could quit.

The hell? What was the point of requiring the mandatory shifts?

I think they're eliminating "casual temps" and are keeping on "holiday staff" and "regular staff." As of February 1st, they'll be minimally staffed. That vacation week is going to be awful. Hospitalizations, I predict!

I think the league of disgruntled ex-VSR's should make a trip to the MoS during that week just to point and laugh at the pure hell they put themselves in.

Hah! That would be grand, though I'd feel too much sympathy for the hapless VSRs who still remain.

I was looking into editing, technical writing, even an administrative position at a university or something. You know, nothing extravagant; just something that pays decent money so I can live alone and write.

I doubt it. Nobody's hiring. Most places have a "hiring freeze" going on. Everybody's looking to lay off. Not enough monies to go around!

My remaining friends at the Museum all expressed sympathies and 'sorry's too. However, I am really not affected or even a little upset. The congratulations are most appropriate! I was pretty much in MoS limbo for a long time. I was honestly going to quit out of principle because they had gone too far too long ago and I had finally had to wash mine hands of the place. So, I guess mine only regret--what makes me even the slightest upset--is that they let me go before I could quit.

The "production assistant" position where you work would be ideal. That's definitely a technical writing position. It'd be a lot of fun! I'd feel bad making more than you for less work, though. It'd be okay if it were because I am a man and you are a woman, though. Haha! Misogyny.
