It's a process steeped in ritual. A chocolate followed by water, your drink of choice and then a dessert. There's rarely dinner involved and we skip out on that as often as is socially acceptable.

Hmmm... by a not very astonishing coincidence, I am to be socially visited by my family today and, for the first time in my life, I have made a moussaka for them. I've made a mess of it, though, so it should keep my relatives away for another while :-)

You made moussaka? I'm impressed. I haven't gotten around to making one yet, something about not liking eggplants. ;)

I wish providing my relatives with bad food/service would be enough to keep them away, but no, they'd just bitch about the visit more afterwards. It's a lose-lose situation.

Oh man, I would go insane if I had to endure that each year. If pushed, I lash out with both guns blazing (as happened a couple of years ago when the now-BIL annoyed the fucking shit out of me while I was cooking soup. I forget what, exactly, I said, but he's steered clear of me ever since.)

I confess that the idea of a Name Day scares me. An extra holiday providing the excuse for relatives to hound you, ye gads!

This tradition sounds delightfully (when I don't have to endure it) perverse. Kudos to the Greek.

Or in Simpson's terms:
