Considering that we're starting with 2Ed - and that seems reputedly the worst of all the editions of the L5R RPG - I'm wondering about this as a concept...

Raises mean that the player can choose to take a risk on board for the possibility of a greater gain; in the specific, voluntarily raising the Target Number (TN) of an action - making their life ( Read more... )

I like the idea... you soft raise to TN15 but miss by 1?! No problem you get the info you would have received with TN10 but no more. You actually make TN15?! Fabulous you get more info than you would have originally. All good as far as I can see... of course, with this as a house rule would it carry on throughout the game regardless of the Ed we're playing??

Couple of things - I think I would not want to carry it over to the new system unless it were equally unforgiving on the characters. Rolling Skill keep Trait in 2Ed is pretty brutal on the starting PC. If 4Ed maintains that then I see a value in using Soft Raises there as well.

Oh, and there is no such thing as a Soft Raise in a duel. A focus would be a Hard Raise, every time. Except maybe for some weird-ass killer duelling school technique that does not exist... yet.
