I was just made an offer to teach Italian at SMU in Dallas, but I have no clue what it is like, what it looks like, what life is like there, and so on...I apologise

All I know is that Texas is a very big state constituted of large flat plains, a lot of cattle, it's very hot there and Dallas is a city with A LOT of crime. Er, I'm not sure that helps lol congratulations on the job offer, though!:)
texas (as mentioned above) is very hot, the home of our "dear" president, and the cost of living in dallas is considerably more than the cost of living in grand rapids. however (and that's a big however), dallas is a large metropolitan city, with a bigger selection of "things to do". considering that i live in indianapolis, and have been to both places, i can't say which i'd choose. dallas is dallas.. its easier and cheaper to book flights out of, but its much more expensive to live there than it would be in grand rapids. but then again, you could always drive to chicago or detroit if you needed/wanted to catch a flight/show.
anyway, congrats with the offer(s) and good luck!!!! :D

I live in Dallas and have many friends who attended SMU. I find it to be a fantastic school. I attend many events there still. Don't let the fact that George W. wants to build his Presidential Library on/near campus scare you. In Dallas, the man only won by a few thousand votes (considering the population of Dallas, it wasn't much). To address the comments above mine, Texas does have flat plains and a bunch of cattle. Of course if you were living in Dallas you wouldn't really notice that. Not much room for cattle in the city or it's 'burbs because there are so many interesting museums, nature centers, restaurants, markets, etc. We also have many decent sports teams! Living in Dallas also gives you the option of taking weekend trips to the hill country (great for biking!), piney woods, Big Bend, the gulf coast, or other great metro cities like Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. Yes Dallas does have it's share of crime. I'm not sure you'd actually be living in Dallas if you moved here. There are numerous suburbs and housing is cheaper if

thanks so much, this is precious info.
could you please tell me more about SMU's students and stuff? some people mentioned how most are into pre-law and business, while the website says a lot are in liberal arts and sciences.
also, i just found out about crime...could you tell me more about it? what kinda crime? if i lived around SMU, would that be a good choice then?

Business is their most popular major. I have two friends that went that route and one friend currently enrolled in pre-law. Social Sciences (economics, Political Science, etc.) is probably second. Girls Gone Wild actually tried to set up shop for a few days at SMU. I think they got one taker. Many students at SMU have more money then the average college student. It's common to see the students riding around in Porches and attending football games in collared shirts & khakis(I've seen this first-hand). Other's don't have daddy to pay for their expenses and work extra hard to ace each course

I just moved to Dallas about a year ago and love it. I do not go to SMU but I work near it and i think that I am well informed. It is located in Highland Park which happens to be the most affluent neighborhood in Dallas. This is both good and bad. It was basically created to be a small town within a big city. Contrary to most small towns there is nothing "hick like" (for lack of a better phrase) about it. In Highland Park village you have shops like Chanel, Gucci, Cartier, Jimmy Choo (and everything other designer at the height of fashion). This may not be important to you, but I am trying to give you a general idea of what the town and people are like. A lot of "old money" resides in this area. There are more millionaires per capita right here in Dallas (and Highland Park is where you'll find the lot of them). A lot of times this comes with a holier than though attitude. But on the other hand, there are still good people who are genuinely nice and not pre-occupied with who's got what. The SMU campus is amazingly
