I think I've been in DC too long - I see DHS and think "since when does Homeland Security give out food stamps?", and then I facepalm at myself.

Every state is different. In NC, it was DHHS.

Yes. Dept. of Human Services, home of the most inhumane process of dispensing public aide known to man.

And it does. This may free up gas money for me to take free library classes to update my computer skills or volunteer or just plain job hunt in the mornings.

What are the eligibility requirements to get a medical card, besides income level? Is it based on age, or having children?

Children or disability pretty much. I'm not technically disabled.
