I wept like a little baby at the end! It lulled you into an "everything will get better" mindset and then pulled that out from under you. It was a weird sort of hospital, wasn't it? Half hospital half mental asylum. I kept expecting the crazy former child star to kill Paco, haha. Maybe I've been watching too many dark movies.
Half of the reviewers don't get the movies they're reviewing. Someone ACTUALLY said that The City of Lost Souls was "disgusting". (They were offended by the poo in the toilet.) Has this person seen the more popular Miike works?!?! Lost Souls was quite tame for gore. God forbid a movie be actually enjoyable and fast-paced. Apparently all movies need to be a slow torture that drills a theme into your head instantly.
Bachan keron! Bachan keron! I'd like to own that story book.
It's immensely stupid calling any Miike "disgusting". Even the goriest I have seen were not that. Koroshiya Ichii had a wonderful higher spiritual message. Of course such subtlety goes completely over most peoples' heads. And they seem to get offended when they are expected to open up their minds and learn something about a different culture. One dickhead complained about Maiko Haaan because he claimed you were expected to know that Gion was a Geisha district. I didn't notice this assumption at all. But why are people so terrified of learning anything new? And why are they so frightened of real life, which is always weird and bizarre and full of strange characters you don't understand? These questions plague me. I haven't read any Shonen Merikansack reviews. I would be too offended for Kankuros sake. Pearls before swine...
I think so too! I am a wimp when it comes to gore but I'd never say disgusting. Disturbing, maybe, but that also usually comes with the plot as well. I guess people are too focused on shock values and just the visuals rather than the whole package. That is just dumb as fuck. You should be able to gather something like that from the cues. If someone says something that bothers you so much, google it. Oh nooo it's too much work to ask someone what something is and learn something new, weh weh spoon feed me! I think what it is is that the older people get, the more afraid they are of being wrong. They don't want to NOT KNOW a reference in a movie. They'll feel stupid. I think it needs to be understood that life is about making mistakes and then learning from them! People are too proud and for little reason. As much as I hate reading reviews I always do it. Same with YouTube comments. I get offended, I yell "BULLSHIT" at my computer; but I keep doing it. Masochism, I think. XD
Miike is an artist, and a true artist can never be disgusting. It's not in their nature.
Yes you are quite right. Older people are generally mentally frozen solid by their pride and self importance. IMO this is the real point of death. Learning is all about looking like a fool so its important not base your self worth on your opinions. Having a solid sense of self worth is not easy in our world though. I suppose I should forgive them all, but I can't help being furious when artists get hurt by their stupidity. What really riles me is not 14 year old flamers though, but retards who actually get paid for their pathetic opinions. These are the kind of people that sway public opinion sadly. Funny to think that the opinions people are so defensive about usually aren't their own at all, but just dripped down from some moron they consider an 'authority'.
