Dogs don't seem to bother with the killing, they just start eating. This one came from 3 doors down. They got it from the pound only 2 weeks ago, and now they know why it was there. They were very nice though and very distressed too. Anyway its my fault in a way for letting them free range. They just hate being caged so much! In a way she was lucky because although her life was short, it was very nice. Unlike most poor chickens out there.
As a child, my grandparents had dogs and chicks and they seemed to get along pretty well (except for the rooster, who never got along with anyone). I am shocked that a dog would attack your chick. >
From what I've read online, it's a pretty common thing. Perhaps when the dogs live with them they become part of the pack. Often dogs will not attack cats they live with but will attack strange ones. But I have read stories of peoples whose own dogs have eaten their chickens too. It amazes me that anyone however retarded can arm themselves with a killing machine like that. There must be fifty dogs on this block, and many of them are pitbull types.
Anyway, thanks for the sympathy :) It really is upsetting. Not only do chickens talk to you with an amazingly varied vocabulary, but they also communicate psychically, especially Nani. It's a terrible thing to lose.
You know? Now that you mention this... this reminds me of wolves. Wolves definitely do this, and that is why fire systems are mounted around coops area, to prevent them from going near.
When I was a kid I used to play mommy and baby with grandma's chickens... *sigh* they can be the cuddliest pets.
Cats and dogs and ferrets and etc, are carnivores and hunters. No matter how much people think they can "civilize" them, animals are animals and they follow their instinct. Their instinct is always stronger. Well, I don't need to tell you that, you already know it. I guess I'm just digressing on your journal. X_x
*hugs you tight* I'm so sorry about all this, dear.
Nani was very cute and very funny. She always made me smile. I spend many hours hanging out with them all in the garden, pulling up weeds so they can scratch the ground and find insects. They love it when you keep them company and hoot mournfully at my window to come out and play. It's really like losing a dear friend. She drew the line at being cuddled though. Maybe if I raised one myself it would be into cuddles.
I don't blame the dog at all. It was all human error. Mine mostly for not protecting her better, and the dog owners for not having adequate fencing. Living with Li Po (who basically feeds himself) I know all about the killing instinct. At least Po has the good grace to make sure his rats are dead before devouring them.
I am always happy for you to digress in my journal :) Or anything else you feel like. Return *hug*.
Happy Birthday for the 12th! :) No doubt that contributed to the liver damage.
I don't dislike dogs really, even now. But I don't think I will ever own one. Too useless and dependent. It's crazy, you could feed half of Africa on what this country stuffs into its dogs.

We're just so used to having them dead before they reach our plates. It is weird.
Anyway, did the dog belong to someone?

I'll really miss her though.
