Disney making fun of Disney is just too meta for me.

So I finally saw Enchanted.  And I gotta say, it lived down to my expectations.  It wasn't awful.  But I did remark to my feverish husband (after the CGI vermin apartment-cleansing scene) "I'm still waiting for this movie to win me over."  Because it was sort of falling right into the live-action Disney traps of weak script, cheap cinematography ( Read more... )

I expected to HATE this movie and was dragged in kicking and scowling. Because I wanted to see Juno. And I still haven't seen Juno. **suppresses rageful noises** But Amy Adams brought so much unexpected joy into that theater -- I've rarely seen an actress just give 110% of herself over to a role and make a pretty mediocre movie fun to watch (with a little help from hi-larious James Marsden). I actually love the vermin scene/song...I think it's the most best Disney parody in the show (and the lyrics are much better, I think, than those in the slightly better tuned song "That's How You Know"). And I liked the movie's central conceit -- that OK, Disney and happily ever after and all that is a little unrealistic, BUT a total lack of magic and settling down with people who don't positively thrill you is a little sad, so don't settle, kids. That said, I agree totally about the horrifyingly bad dragon (WTF?!) and really much of the last scene, most of the songs/lyrics (Schwartz sucks hard), and some abysmal acting (gawd, Idinia, stop!).

You can do a lot when you've got such a happy working tune to hum
while you're sponging up the soapy scum.
We adore each filthy chore that we determine,
so friends, even though you're vermin,
we're all a happy working throng,
singing as we fetch the detergent box for the smelly shirts and the stinky socks.
Sing along...if you cannot sing then hum along...
as we're finishing our happy working song!

Idina's chin was more terrifying than the villain. By far. I at least didn't expect to hate the movie. It was exactly what I thought it would be. But after a number of people telling me that I would love it, I thought maybe they'd be right. I should know to trust my instincts.
