Met the second neurosurgeon yesterday, and followed up with number one.  (Both named Cohen.  As one of the managers at work said: "Good.  A nice Jewish boy.")

I'm responding very, very well to conservative treatment.  Conventional wisdom and protocol say that when a patient responds well to conservative treatment, surgery is not necessary or wise.  ( Read more... )

Arrgh. On the one hand, I'm sorry to hear that the decision isn't obvious. On the other hand, I'm glad to hear that it isn't obvious that you should rush into surgery now. On the third hand, surgery sounds like it would be its own challenge, in addition to (and different from) just recovering from the current flare-up.

I really don't know what you "should" do. I like the sound of the two neurosurgeons you've seen so far, though, based on this report -- they don't seem scalpel-crazy, which is good. Another question to try asking: "What if your wife or your child or you were in my shoes -- what would you recommend?"
