with spleen defeciency, period hurts due to lack of blood flow (same can be said wth liver blood deficiency). that would explain wehat your teach saw in your tongue. she should also take your pulse to make sure, on top of asking even more personal questions (just getting you ready *g*) look in the mirror at your sublingual veins, if they are dark that means that there is blood stagnation. as for the sudden pain that is usually due to wind cold. cold, as you can prolly guess, slows things down ;)
anyway enough babbling from the doc in training. get checked. she will probably give you some herbs to tonify your spleen and probably liver along with promoting blood circulation.
as for the needling get some 1 cun (measured inch) needles. those are the most used. 1/2 cun needles are more for the face and closer to the wrist and maybe ankle and foot where there is less flesh to poke.

you should of seen what came out of my veins in Techniques class.
The teach was deomnstrating bleeding and poked one of the veins in my elbow crease and the blood came out black. talk about a shocker! :)
