I've never had to deal with hail before. I must be lucky, I've just never been in it or even seen it with my own eyes.
Now hail and I are well acquainted.
Last night I noticed that there was lightning in the distance and Buddy hadn't been out in a while so I wanted to take him out before it started raining. He did not want to stay outside at all. After looking at me like "Do I have to?" he finally went then went straight up the stairs. I thought that was sort of odd, usually he only doesn't like it out if it's pouring rain and it hadn't even started raining at all yet. So I decided that I had better turn on the tv and make sure it wasn't too bad since there was a bad hail storm downtown last week. Sure enough, there's a bad storm about to hit and the very worse of it was headed right for me. There were reports of broken windows due to large hail and winds. It kinda scared me a bit so I tried to stay away from the windows just a bit so I could still see the tv but Buddy kept going by the glass sliding door. In reality is pretty much impossible to avoid flying glass in my apartment unless you go into my walk in closet or my bathroom, and since my closet is bigger I put Buddy in there and went in there since I heard the hail start coming down. At first it was just some tiny pings... but then it was loud thuds. Scary! It didn't last very long, and none of my windows busted so it was cool. I found out though that it was golf ball sized, which is pretty damn big for hail if you ask me. My jeep has a bunch of little dents in it but you can't really see them unless you really look... so I'm not sure if I'll report it to the insurance company yet or not.
This morning I headed out of Austin by 8:45 to get to Fredericksburg and meet my parents at my grandparent's house. As I got passed Stonewall and into Fredericksburg it suddenly got really dark, but it mostly just looked like a really big raincloud so I didn't think much of it. I was on the backroad to my grandparents', not 2-3 miles from their house when it starts pouring down... and almost immediately it starts hailing... in SHEETS! I just about freaked out because I've never driven in hail before and I was so scared that it might bust my windshield. I learned really fast though that hail is the most slippery thing I've ever driven on my entire life plus I couldn't see anything in front of me at all, I could just barely make out the road because it was white. I creeped along since I knew I was so close and just prayed to the Gods the entire time that I'd make it there even though I kept thinking of all the different things that could happen (tornadoes, sliding and losing control of my jeep, hail busting through my windshield, glass cutting, hail pummeling.... yeah I'm a worry wort). Just about as soon as I pull up to my grandparents', the hail stops. My parents were on their way there as well but from a different direction, so I called them anyways to watch out. They said they figured I was worrying too much and it wasn't that bad... then when they got out there and saw all the hail they were like "Oh my God, that must've been coming down in sheets!". It seriously looked like it had just snowed an inch out at my grandma's. Of course, I was the only one that ran into it, though.
Went almost 21 years without encountering hail, then I had to deal with it twice in a 12 hour period. I'm tired.
