Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

I was looking up where I could get these compact fluorescent light bulbs today, and was having a hard time. There's information spread out there but nothing very concise. What I decided to do was see what information I could find so that maybe just a few of you that read this might be stimulated to make a small change.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs use over 30% less energy to provide the same amount of light as a standard incandescent bulb. They also last around 10 times longer. Less energy = less pollution. The bulbs are slightly more expensive (starting around $1.89), but you will save money replacing bulbs because they will last longer, and you will save big time on your electric bill.
For example, here are the stats on a 23 Watt CFL bulb from Home Depot. It is equivalent to a 100 Watt Incandescent. You can find this information at www.homedepot.com.

The 23 watt spiral uses 75% less energy than a 100 watt incandescent equivalent and lasts 13 times longer.

• Saves $308 over life of bulb
• Lasts 13 times longer than traditional incandescent bulb
• Same appearance as incandescent bulb
• Fits most fixtures an incandescent bulb will fit

Here are some more quotes on why they're so great.

"If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars." - Energy Star (www.energystar.gov)

"Replace 2 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. The new bulbs will last longer and use less energy which means less pollution from power plants. Your household would save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. If every household in the United States did it, we would save a trillion pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere!" - StopGlobalWarming.org

It's apparent that if more of us took action, even something as small as changing out a few light bulbs, it CAN make a big difference. The more small changes we make in time, the more of a chance that we can stop global warming. We can't reverse the damage it has done as easily as we can prevent further damage from being done.

So where can you get them? Here's a few places that Energy Star has listed as stores in the Austin area that carry CFL bulbs.
