Just let her know not to fall for any of her publisher's deals whereby she gets to buy a few thousand copies of her own book at a "discount" rate -- PublishAmerica have a fairly dodgy rep:

Yeah, from people whose books didn't sell, sour grapes and all that methinks. Thanks Tom!

Well, that's one way of looking at it I guess. ;)

I just think that most writers who want to self-publish would be better off setting up their own small publishing houses, & genuinely self-publishing their own POD books via Lightning Source -- cost would only be a couple of hundred quid, market penetration would be as good as for PublishAmerica et al, and you'd get to retain full rights if you chose to sell the rights to a real publisher, as well as getting full profits on each book you did sell (rather than a royalty).

Again, by those whose books didn't sell. You don't have to go for that option - you're not pressured in any way to do so. It certainly is an option, but if your work is good enough to sell on its own (through the Chapters bookstores and online, as well as by word of mouth) then you shouldn't have to buy your own copies to sell onto others. Might as well just go to a vanity press if that is what you really want. Lots of people have been google bombing PA without any reason, other than their pride!

Whoops - forgot to add, full rights are retained by the author. Just depends if you want to use PA to get your first couple of books off the ground, which is a sound plan if you ask me! Getting published without paying, and then finding an agent for promotional reasons once you're "established" is easier for some than setting up their own publishing company (but wow, would I love to do that! hmmm...)
