I made flan today, will find out how it is tomorrow. I've never had it, had first read mention of it in a Harlan Ellison story where a unicorn ate it from a Limoges dish ( Read more... )

Wish I could cook. Instead, I've rediscovered Tarot (finally got a cheap Rider-Waite). The symbolism comes so naturally, although I find that some of Waite's interpretations... well, I'm going by them now, but sometimes I not what I read in the cards. And I'm worried that I always read into the cards pretty much what I'd tell the questioner anyway: I feel there should be an element of surprise: although I shouldn't really expect that on third reading.

If flan were any simpler, it'd make itself.

I'd say you probably have a better grasp of symbolism than the Waite book, bearing in mind that the symbolism is there to add layers of meaning and don't necessarily apply to any one reading.

If you keep at it, you'll get good at it, and there will be plenty elements of surprise--those are when you look back later and say "Oh, so THAT'S what that meant!"

That may have been a Sevres plate instead of Limoges. I'll have to look up that story again one day. It was in the Deathbird Stories.
