We've been out to the thrift stores.  I found several pair of wool trousers, green plaid flannel sheets, blue jersey sheets, a white cotton top sheet (the fitted was disgustingly stained, so I left it), a gingham check shirt to make the dress for the "Dorothy" doll, and a jersey dress of cherries on a yellow ground ( Read more... )

The wool worsted has come through the wash satisfactorily with little or no shrinkage despite being washed with hot, rinsed with cold and then ironed wet. The "dry clean only" must have been for the benefit of the rayon linings.

It resists water very well, and dries quickly. The flannel does the opposite. They may not be the best pairing for a skirt, but I'm bound to try it, anyway. I should probably pick up some more thread.

If I do a nice enough job at designing and sewing the shawl, I think I'll be pretty happy with it. Briefly considered quilting it, but should attempt something simpler, first. Like a potholder. Don't think I'll try fringed ends, mainly because I don't really have anything to fringe them with. Hazel gave me some piping. that might make it look too much like a table runner.

One thing I'll have to remember if I buy wool trousers again is to search for them in the larger sizes. More material--duh!
