Since I finished canon reviewing it, I just have some thoughts about the three central protagonists. I wrote this on Plurk first, so it's a bit disjointed and rambly.
I think you point out the thing I like most about ATLA (and why it will always be one of my favorite series period, not just "animated" or "TV series") -- in that the writers had the balls to make them unlikable, sometimes. Not unlikable as in we're-trying-to-make-a-Coolkid-to-appeal-to-the-demographic-but-really they're-just-annoyingashell, but immature. They're real kids, and it does the story a lot of credit.
I do especially like Jet's episode, for the same reasons, too-- it was before everyone is officially thinking of Sokka as The Plan Guy, when his strengths first start to assert themselves.
Well I'm glad someone read it! Maybe I'll do this when I finish up Book 2. Though those episodes are more fresh in my mind, so I dunno if I'll have as many thoughts on them.
That's one reason, I think, Shira and I are able to play them as siblings so well. They both have their flaws and that makes for a more realistic relationship. We're both working with some excellent material and just expanding on what's already there.
