Shocking Moments in Video Games

I was a little surprised to come across this on MSNBC of all places.

Top 5 Shocking Video Game Moments

These are obviously subjective, but having played all but one of them, there are only a few additional cases that I can think of that I could rate as possibly being as big as the others listed.

I am pleased they included the Resident Evil dogs. That's my top pick.

I think I would have to agree. It was the only thing that was pure shock value. The Aeris bit would have been more of a shock than it was when it happened if it hadn't been spoiled a week earlier by my younger brother, whom I pummeled for opening his mouth.

I'll admit to being shocked by the Aeris bit. The Resident Evil dogs were also a scare, although I didn't play the game until its GameCube remake.

The truly hysterical thing about that list, however, is that I have on occasion come across people online in video game communities that didn't realize Samus is a woman even though it's been known in gaming circles for over twenty years now.

Yeah, the first time I saw the game played at a friend's house when I was 8 or so was when I learned that Samus was female. He had used a little "Secret Code" that let you play her without her armor on and with every powerup. So that moment wasn't such a surprise to me, but I still recognize that it was significant for the time.

Ah, yes, the JUSTIN BAILEY code. When I unlocked the original NES Metroid ROM in Metroid: Zero Mission, I entered the password into the game and lo and behold, it still works.

The thing that I always found most interesting about the Metroid games is that out of all of Nintendo's major series, it was the only series that actually had any sort of continuous plotline. It's kind of funny, because Samus's first major "character development" was the shock surprise of her actually being a girl, but in terms of story, she arguably has the deepest history of any of Nintendo's characters.

I always found the damn crows from RE2 more terrifying than the dogs.

Also? The final fight in Super Metroid. HOLY COW.

Are you referring to the "intervention" in the Super Metroid final?

Oh yes. After getting your butt kicked that hard, being able to reverse it was SO FUCKING SWEET. Therapeutic, even.

Yeah the whole Aeris (Aerith) thing always pissed me off. I could have sworn I just cast a spell or used an item to bring you back to life 5 minutes ago. Why doesnt it work now? See also FF2 where the twin mages turn themselves to stone...I specifically bought items to solve this problem last time we were in town. It worked 10 minutes ago in the boss fight, but what now fuckers?
